Overview

The Wellbeing & Sport Scheme launched in Newcastle with Module One hosted by Newcastle United Football Club. Over two days, MPs were immersed in the operational, scientific, and community-facing elements of a modern elite football club.

The programme moved beyond perceptions of professional football as entertainment, instead presenting NUFC as a system where performance science, youth development, governance, and social impact intersect.

Agenda Highlights

Day One

  • Cochrane Park – Men’s Training Ground
  • Elite performance, sports science, and data-led injury prevention
  • St James’ Park dinner and governance discussions

Day Two

  • Academy and youth development pathways
  • NUFC Foundation and community integration
  • Engagement with grassroots, women’s, and youth programmes
Key Insights
  • Community Integration
MPs consistently highlighted how deeply Newcastle United is embedded within its local community, with the NUFC Foundation positioned at the heart of social impact work across the city.
  • Elite Performance & Data
Participants gained new understanding of the science underpinning elite football, including psychology, nutrition, training methodologies, and pitch data used to reduce injury risk and optimise performance.
  • Youth & Women’s Development
Investment in academy pathways and the women’s team was seen as exceeding minimum requirements, with MPs noting a commitment to setting best practice across the sport.
  • Governance & Professionalism
MPs were struck by the club’s data-driven, highly professional approach, and how strong governance enables sustainable sporting and community success.
  • Sharing Best Practice
A recurring theme was the desire to transfer learnings to lower-league clubs and MPs’ own constituencies, including Blackpool, Bury, and Charlton Athletic.
Outcomes

Post-visit evaluation showed:

  • 88% of MPs experienced a significant knowledge gap being closed
  • High retention of detailed operational and technical learning
  • Strong emotional engagement driven by community impact
