In October 2025, Members of Parliament took part in a two-day immersive visit to the RNLI College in Poole as part of the Frontline Services Scheme. The visit provided MPs with first-hand exposure to the scale, complexity, and professionalism of RNLI operations—far beyond public perceptions of lifeboat rescues alone.

The RNLI College visit marked the launch of the 2025/26 Frontline Services Scheme. Hosted over two days in Poole, Dorset, the programme brought MPs inside the operational, technical, and human realities of the RNLI—one of the UK’s most trusted emergency services.

The agenda combined strategic briefings with practical exposure, allowing MPs to engage directly with lifeboat crews, lifeguards, engineers, trainers, and leadership teams. The experience was designed to move beyond theory, grounding learning in lived operational practice.

Agenda Highlights

Day One

  • RNLI International operations and global knowledge-sharing
  • Visit to Poole Lifeboat Station
  • Systems overview of coastal rescue coordination

Day Two

  • Lifeboat operations and crew training
  • Lifeguard services and preventative safety work
  • Boat building, engineering, and maintenance
  • Small boats response within wider RNLI operations

Key Insights
  • Scale & Breadth of Operations
  • MPs consistently expressed surprise at the RNLI’s full remit, including lifeguarding, international outreach, training, and in-house vessel design and maintenance.
  • Volunteer Commitment
  • The dedication of tens of thousands of highly trained volunteers emerged as a defining theme, with MPs describing both the bravery involved and the emotional impact of understanding this commitment.
  • Professionalism & Compassion
  • Participants highlighted the RNLI’s ability to combine world-class technical expertise with compassion, data-driven decision-making, and operational precision—despite its charitable status.
  • International Impact
  • MPs were struck by the RNLI’s role in sharing over 200 years of expertise globally, including its contribution to World Drowning Prevention Day, now recognised by the United Nations.
  • Small Boats Context
  • Several MPs noted that only around 3.5% of RNLI activity relates to small boats, reinforcing the organisation’s singular focus on saving lives at sea regardless of circumstance.

Outcomes

Post-visit evaluation showed:

  • 100% of MPs experienced a significant knowledge gap being closed
  • High levels of emotional engagement and systems-level understanding
  • Clear intent among MPs to share insights publicly and apply learning within parliamentary work

Testimonial
The thing that sticks out the most for me is the breadth of different work that the RNLI do. Clearly, people are aware that they save lives at sea. But I think in addition to that, the lifeguard service, the work that they do with partners overseas... the scale of what they do is just absolutely phenomenal.
